The Uni Years: 1990-1993
For the final degree piece, I created an installation that contained a slide show (accompanied by the sounds of ‘Private Life’ by Grace Jones), photographs and photo-montages.
For the previous six months, I had lived and breathed photography; hidden away in my bedroom/studio. My technical equipment consisted of a manual Canon AT-1, a tripod, a few lenses and a cable release. The staging consisted of everything I had at my disposal. Special effects by way of make-up on my face and tissue paper over the camera lens.
Unfortunately, there is no visual documentation of this installation.
So, what follows is a selection of the original images, digitised from some 24 yrs old, poorly kept slides.
An artist friend said to me, that artists often think about what their work means post creation – and quite often, some time after. Although there was a clear thought process while producing this work, clarity of its meaning has only recently occurred as I approach middle age.
